Though the sun’s rays seem to reach every corner of the Earth, in fact, the mighty life-giving light falls short in some areas of the planet’s geography. For instance, darkness reigns in the ocean’s depths and the creatures that inhabit that solitary environment have developed their own lighting system called bioluminescence. Some 80% to 90% of undersea creatures make their own light, sometimes to lure in prey, at other times to lure a mate, or simply as a defense.
